Packed Lunch Fail

I asked A.J. yesterday what he wanted for lunch since he’s started summer camp and has to bring his food rather than buy it from a cafeteria. He listed a number of items, including smoked salmon (!) and cookies.

This is what went with him to camp this morning:

1 small container of smoked salmon
1/2 ham-and-cheese sandwich
1 small container of Pringles potato chips
1 fruit roll-up
1 small container of pineapple chunks
1 small package of Oreos

These are all foods he likes and requested, with the exception of the sandwich, which I threw in to make sure he had enough protein. Despite my efforts, this is what came home:

1 small container of smoked salmon
1/2 ham-and-cheese sandwich
1/2 small container of Pringles potato chips
1 small container of pineapple chunks
1 small package of Oreos

Basically, he ate the fruit roll-up and half the container of potato chips. I am very frustrated.

Virtual Me

Just updated the starter page at my other site, peggyhu.com, mostly to update the fact that the public diplomacy website I worked on for four years was decommissioned in March. Now we’re all into RSS feeds and social media. I have enough trouble managing my own Twitter/Facebook/blog/e-mail accounts; how is anyone supposed to follow all the channels someone else runs? Is anyone reading any of the stuff we produce now that we don’t have a website?

Web work

I’ve been very busy redesigning the AAJA-D.C. website lately. Here are some screenshots of the latest version of the index page:

Routines

It’s funny how much I use routines to anchor myself in time. I’ve been confused much of this afternoon about what day it is because we’ve been doing our normal Sunday routines; Chris did the laundry, I was on call for work, and A.J. did his homework. It almost feels like tomorrow is an extra day off!

And I Thought This Was Supposed to Be a Quiet Weekend ….

I managed to get out of working this weekend — a rarity! — because of house guests. Nevertheless, I ended up being incredibly busy!

Aside from doing the weekly grocery shopping, straightening up the house, and cooking dinner for eight people Saturday, I also:

  • Updated the AAJA-D.C. home page Friday night, including doing some design work.
  • Showed my mother-in-law this morning how to register a Webkinz toy so she can play with A.J. and me.
  • Reviewed A.J.’s progress on his book report, which is due at the end of this month.
  • Finished and e-filed my 2010 federal and state taxes today. (For the first time since college, I don’t owe anything – amazing!)
  • Took my mother-in-law to the art supply store and the mall, where I bought A.J. a new sweatshirt, a pair of jeans, and some Easter stuff. My mother-in-law and I also did a little shopping for ourselves (hee hee!).
  • Cooked dinner for five people tonight.

Now I’m trying to finish writing up the minutes of a meeting the AAJA-D.C. board had last weekend and prepare A.J.’s school bag for tomorrow morning. I also need to edit a travel essay my dad sent me a few weeks ago, put together a newsletter listing upcoming AAJA-D.C. events, and do more work on the AAJA-D.C. page, but that’s not happening tonight.

Who was it who said “nature abhors a vacuum”? I seem to have a knack for always finding things to keep me busy!

Presidents’ Day 2011

Today Chris and I had an unexpected free day. Since A.J.’s school system has had so many snow days this winter, school officials decided to have the kids go to a full day of school today instead of observing the Presidents’ Day holiday as originally scheduled. Since Chris and I are both government employees, we got the day off. Appropriately, we decided to go to Ford’s Theatre, where President Lincoln was shot in 1865. Strangely enough, today was the first visit to Ford’s Theatre for either of us despite the years we have each lived in the D.C. area.

Here are a few pictures from our visit:

Gun in case

This is the gun John Wilkes Booth used to kill President Lincoln in 1865. Note how it is set in the case to point at the drawing of Lincoln -- creepy!

Blogging in the New Year

Finally got a chance to write a new blog post for work. You can read it here:

Democracy Through the Eyes of a Child

Hopefully I’ll be able to carve out more time to blog this year — at work and at home!

March of the Moderates

Yesterday Chris and I went downtown to the Rally to Restore Sanity/Keep Fear Alive, organized by Comedy Central’s Jon Stewart of the Daily Show and Stephen Colbert of the Colbert Report. I was surprised and very encouraged to see how many other people were there. I think CBS has estimated there were roughly 215,000 people at the rally, many with great signs. Here were some I saw:

I'm a moderate, and I vote!

Go, moderates!

Some of the things taxes pay for

More things taxes pay for

The guest performances were great — Father Guido Sarducci gave an entertaining “benediction,” the Mythbusters did some crowd experiments, Yusuf (better known as Cat Stevens) and Ozzy Osborne had a musical battle, and much more. But my favorite part was Jon Stewart’s closing speech, which you can watch below:

Incidentally, we did have A.J. with us, but he basically played with his DSi and ate snacks throughout the whole rally. Ah well; at least he was well-behaved. Perhaps he’ll appreciate these events more when he’s older.

Rainy Day Haiku

For some reason, rainy days inspire creative fits in me. Here’s a haiku I came up with during my walk from the subway station to the office:

Red, green, blue and white
Umbrellas bloom like flowers
Welcoming the rain.

Chocolate!

At the grocery store this afternoon, I found a large, chocolate confection resembling a giant truffle. Since I LOVE chocolate, I yielded to temptation and brought it home even though it’s not anyone’s birthday or any other type of special occasion. “It looks like an army helmet,” my husband commented when he saw it. You can see for yourself below:

Chocolate truffle cake, with apple for size comparison

The label on the cake is pretty awesome, too:

7" Chocolate Truffle Bomb: Dark moist chocolate cake filled with a silky chocolate cream and chocolate mousse all enrobed in a chocolate ganache.

I wonder if I could learn how to make one of these?
